How much do agents charge when selling a home?
A traditional real estate agent will charge a 6% commission for selling your home. The 6% commission is generally split evenly between both the listing agent and the buying agent’s commission. So, each agent on either side of the equation will usually receive 3% of the overall commission.
If you decide to go the discount agent route, you can expect to save 1-2% of the sell-side commission. Most discount agents on the sell side will charge either a flat fee or a commission in the range of 1 to 1.5%.
While the seller is typically responsible for paying both commissions, the reality is the commission is often wrapped into the house price. More specifically, sellers will factor in the cost of realtor commissions when they are pricing their homes for sale.
