To get your search going, here’s the list of the top places to live in South Dakota:

1. Brookings

With highly rated public schools and a close-knit suburban vibe, Brookings is one of the top cities in South Dakota to call home. According to Niche, approximately 23,500 residents live in Brookings and this area provides easy access to nightlife, restaurants, parks, and coffee shops.

The school system is one of the best in the state with an overall A- rating. While this is a great place for families to reside, it’s also the home of many young professionals, with a solid economy and a steady job market.

Median home values in Brookings are $201,300 according to August 2019 data from Zillow. Values are not expected to rise over the next 12 months in Brookings, which means it will be easier to negotiate when purchasing a home in this city.

2. Sioux Falls

This South Dakota city is ideal for anyone looking for a more urban environment in this predominately rural state. While Sioux Falls is a major city, it has a mix of urban and suburban neighborhoods, all with quick access to shops, restaurants, bars, and parks.

While this city tends to be home to many young professionals, Sioux Falls also has top-rated public schools, making it a great place to raise a family.

Median home values in Sioux Falls are right on par with the state’s average, coming in at $192,900. Values have increased by 5.0% over the past 12 months and are predicted to increase by another 2.7% in the next 12 months. Buying a South Dakota home now while the market is starting to slow is a great way to find your new home for a bargain.

3. Dakota Dunes

If living directly in a major city doesn’t sound appealing, you can live just north of Sioux Falls in Dakota Dunes, for easy city access, while living in a more suburban and rural setting, along the Big Sioux and Missouri River. This small town boasts top public schools, easy commutes, and quick access to top amenities. Cost of living is also one of the most affordable for a top-notch community in this state.

Home values in Dakota Dunes are on par with the values in Sioux Falls ($192,900), with values predicted to continue rising. Since late summer to fall typically sees home prices begin to drop, purchasing during this time frame often allows buyers to pick from a variety of homes at lower prices.

4. Vermillion

The South Dakota town of Vermillion is great for families looking to live away from the city, but also boasts good job opportunities for young working professionals. Vermillion is home to 10,687 residents and offers many of the same draws of big cities in a smaller town setting because it’s also home to the University of South Dakota. As a result, Vermillion has a large number of restaurants, bars, and other thriving attractions.

Public schools also have a B rating here and crime is fairly low.

Median home values in this area are at $136,100, well below the state’s average. This makes it easier to own a home for less money, in an area that still offers great access to jobs, amenities, and attractions.

5. Brandon

This thriving little South Dakota town is home to just under 10,000 residents and offers a suburban, small-town feel. With some of the best public schools in the state (A+ ratings) and an extremely low crime rating, Brandon is an excellent place for families to call home. Brandon also has a great job market and is an easy place for commuters to live, making it a good option for working professionals.

Median home values in Brandon are $242,000, well above the state’s median. Home values have increased by 6% over the past 12 months and are expected to increase by another 3.5% over the next 12 months. While median listing values are well above the median home value price, with the marketing beginning to slow, it’s likely that buyers will find home prices beginning to drop.
