If you're moving long distance, don't forget to plan for the actual move itself. By employing a great moving company to help, you can reduce your stress and make sure your belongings arrive safely. Here are 10 of the best out there.

When it comes to long-distance moving companies, not all are created equal. Each company offers different amenities, storage options, and insurance coverages that come with different pricing structures. In order to compare them, you'll need to decide how much of the work you'd like to do yourself — like packing, disassembling, and loading — and what you would like to hire a moving company to handle.

We can divide the services moving companies provide into three different categories — full-service companies that do it all, companies that provide a pod or storage container (which they transport for you), and companies that simply offer the moving truck (that you drive cross-country yourself). Here are some of the best across all three categories.

To compare companies more accurately, we used an example of moving from a three-bedroom home in Texas to Nebraska at the end of August.

  1. Allied Van Lines

The biggest perk of Allied Van LInes is that you can opt for as little or as much help as you need. After you purchase the most basic moving package, most of the other options are offered a la carte — which is great for someone moving on a budget. You can customize your move how you want it and not spend more than your budget allows. An added bonus is being able to track the location of your moving van online.

Base price includes

Loading, transportation, and unloading, plus online tracking and basic liability insurance coverage.

Optional add-ons

Full-service packing, packing of fragile items, moving boxes and packaging material for DIYers, unpacking, crating of expensive items, car or boat transportation, assembly/disassembly, and storage, plus full valuation insurance coverage.

Pricing

Low side: $5900-$6800

Middle: $7000-$7671

High-side: $7800+

2. Bekins

If you're a do-it-yourselfer, you'll want to check out Bekins Van Lines, who has been in business for more than 125 years. They offer instant online quotes and load of discounts — if you do a little extra planning, you could save quite a bit. The company offers a $150 discount for moving between September and April. Plus, they offer reduced pricing on specialty packing material.

Base price includes

Loading, transportation, and unloading, plus online tracking and basic liability insurance coverage.

Optional add-ons

Full-service packing, partial packing (you pack some, they pack some), fragile-only packing, moving boxes and packaging material for DIYers, unpacking, specialty item or car transportation, and storage, plus full valuation insurance coverage.

Pricing

Base: $4200-$5000

Partial Packing: $5250-$6350

Full Packing: $6000-$7250

Full valuation insurance coverage: Add another 13% or so to the final total

3. United Van Lines

United Van Lines offers great insurance coverage — full-value replacement on every move. Plus, you'll get an in-home tech guru to uninstall or configure your full computer set-up, plus your home theatre system. As if that isn't enough, they offer a move-out/move-in cleaning service and destination debris pickup as add-ons.

Base price includes

Loading, transportation, and unloading, shipment tracking, plus full-value replacement insurance coverage.

Optional add-ons

Home electronics disassembly/assembly, move-out/move-in cleaning services, destination debris pickup, full-service packing, unpacking, car transportation, and storage.

4. U-Pack

U-Pack is a long-distance-only mover for those not looking to spring for a full-service company. With U-Pack, you pay for what you use and don't need a deposit in order to schedule your move. If you don't have a ton of stuff, you may opt for the “ReloCube” that holds about 1 room's worth of furniture and is about 300 cubic feet.

Otherwise, go for the more traditional moving trailer — but again, only pay for what you use! Plus, you're not held to your original estimate. If U-Pack shows up and you need less space than originally thought, you only pay for what you actually use. This takes the stress out of accurately trying to estimate how good your Tetris skills are. We also love their instant quote system!

Base price includes

Transportation and tracking.

Optional add-ons

Loading, unloading, and storage.

Pricing

Transportation Only: $2400

Loading: Add $400

Unloading: Add $550

5. International Van Lines

International Van Lines offers a month of free storage with each move, so you won't have to worry if your new home isn't quite ready when you arrive. Plus, their customer service reps are on call over the phone or through the company's online chat feature to help should any unanticipated problems arise.

Base price includes

Basic furniture assembly/disassembly, loading, transportation, and unloading (up or down one flight of stairs), plus basic liability insurance coverage.

Optional add-ons

Full-service packing, specialty crating, crane service, piano transport, motorcycle handling, moving boxes and packaging material for DIYers, unpacking, complex furniture assembly/disassembly, and storage, plus full valuation insurance coverage.

7. U-Haul

If you're a big DIYer, you might consider renting a U-Haul truck and making the drive yourself. Sure, you'll have to do all the planning and gruntwork, but you'll save a lot of money by doing so.

You'll be in charge of packing your own items, but U-Haul does offer packing and moving supplies for an additional fee. They also have a strong network of local movers they can connect you with to help you with the heavy lifting both when moving out of your old home or when you arrive at your new one.

Base price includes

Truck rental only

Optional add-ons

Moving boxes and dollies, plus you can add-on help from local movers for help loading or unloading.

Pricing

Truck Rental: $765

8. PODS

PODS, or Portable On Demand Storage, is similar to U-Pack in that the company provides a storage container, you load it yourself and then they ship it cross-country for you. In a survey by Newsweek, PODS was ranked number one for customer service in the moving services category.

One of the perks to using a PODS container is that they are ground-level for easy, rank-free loading. Plus, you can load on your own time and store for as long as you'd like.

Base price includes

Transportation

Optional add-ons

Storage, plus you can add-on help from local movers for help loading or unloading.

9. Best Interstate Moving and Storage

If you're thinking about making a cross-country move, be sure to work with an experienced, local agent to make sure the process goes smoothly. They also have the experience and knowledge to recommend a great long-distance moving company.

Clever Partner Agents are top-rated real estate agents who are experts in their local markets. They come from major brands and regional brokerages — like Keller Williams and Century 21 — and offer the same full service as other agents. The only difference is that they have agreed to work for a flat fee of $3,000, or 1% if your home sells for more than $350,000. This means the same quality service of other agents, but more money in your pocket.

In addition to helping you sell your existing home, Partner Agents may also be able to help you uncover additional cost-savings opportunities when buying. Plus, you're eligible for a $1,000 buyer's rebate on any home you purchase for more than $150,000 (in 40 states).
